Ohio State will have to win a lot of battles to leave Cameron Indoor Stadium with a win against Duke, but rebounding is atop that list.

Both were wins for the Buckeyes.

“It’s been something he’s emphasized not only for Wednesday but up until this point,” West Virginia graduate transfer guard Sean McNeil said. “We haven’t been great on the glass but something we’re going to continue all work at and get better at. They’re known for offensive rebounding and rebounding in general so we’ve got to be just that much more physical.”

Duke has not had a team shoot this poorly from two-point range since the 2009-10 season, when the Blue Devils went 35-5 and won the national championship despite shooting 47.0% from inside the 3-point line. This year’s 3-point percentage would be the team’s lowest in the KenPom era, which dates back to the 1996-97 season.“I feel like we found that out against San Diego State on multiple chances,” freshman guard Bruce Thornton said.

Senior Northwestern transfer Ryan Young ranks fifth nationally in offensive rebounding percentage at 21.2. Freshman Kyle Filipowski , who leads the team at 15.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, is second at 11.2%. Young’s 33 offensive rebounds alone are more than all but two Ohio State players’ rebounding totals this season. Holtmann credited Duke’s rebounders for both having size and pursuing the ball with high motors.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “We’re still adding to our defense and we’re just not there. We’re certainly a work in progress as a team, but defensively we just have a long way to go. I think our performance in Maui on the defensive end was just OK in spots. It needs to grow.”
