February 11, 2026. and Michael Neuman occurred Monday evening at Smith Lab on Ohio State's campus. It was captured on video by D.J. Byrnes, "The Rooster," and has been viewed over one million times."We are aware of the incident, and it is very concerning," Ohio State's media team told ABC 6 on Wednesday. "The faculty member involved has been placed on administrative leave pending a full OSUPD investigation and thorough review of the facts ... The faculty member was placed on leave February 10." "I thought we were in a bastion of free speech only to end up with a guy physically assaulted," Byrnes told ABC 6 on Wednesday. "There's no other way to describe it other than assault. It was bizarre.""They're at a public university that's taxpayer funded," Ratliff told ABC 6. "My client had never been given notice that he can't be in the buildings at Ohio State and I think all journalists are able to be there." It is unclear how Perez became involved with the situation, as Neuman's attorney says he was attempting to ask former OSU President Gordon Gee questions about student loan debt. "My client wants Perez prosecuted and terminated," Ratliff added. "This is not the actions of an admirable professor or someone who's professional. If the roles were reversed, he definitely would already be in jail." "Perez came out and told us he didn't consent to being filmed," Byrnes added. "We didn't even know who he was and we weren't there for him. When you're in these situations, I have a pretty good read on people who could be a physical threat. I thought he was just some random guy." Perez, a 12-year veteran of the Air National Guard, has expertise in U.S. foreign policy, ethics of war, religious freedom, and international human rights, according to his ABC 6 asked Perez if he felt threatened by Neuman, if he has had any previous interactions with him, and how he got involved in the situation. He deferred to OSU's media relations team for further comment. "I would never say asking questions of public officials on public grounds is antagonizing," Byrnes added. "I think more questions should be asked." Ratliff said Neuman is "sore" after the altercation and it is unclear if any of his camera equipment was damaged. "Perez did come around his head and neck area and crunched it pretty good," Ratliff added. "He knocks him to the ground and he falls with all his equipment. He's a little banged up at this point. He is very taken back by the situation and still trying to wrap his head around what happened to him."ABC 6 has requested a copy of Perez's personnel file.
