Barely two years after Cincinnati Republican JD Vance was sworn in as Ohio’s junior U.S. Senator, Vance will resign from the job at midnight to become Donald Trump ’s vice president on January 20. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will pick Vance’s successor. Whoever he selects will need to seek reelection in 2026 to stay on the job. The successor will then have to go before voters again in 2028 to win a full six-year term.DeWine, who served in the U.S.
Senate from 1995 through 2007, has emphasized that his appointee must have a strong chance of holding the seat in 2026 and 2028. He will look for “somebody who really wants to do the work of the Senate” and get involved in committee work and legislation. Vance spent much of his time using the job’s bully pulpit to blast Democratic President Joe Biden and extoll Trump. This paid off when Trump decided to make Vance his running mate
