The bill would make it easier for those with drug convictions or not paying child support to get back their license.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Senate has passed a bill that would reduce when and for how long Ohioans lose their driver’s licenses after getting convicted of a crime, a change backers say will help people straighten out their lives after getting involved in the criminal justice system.
Allow people with suspended licenses to apply to have their driving privileges restored if they wouldn’t have lost them in the first place under the new rules. To become law, the bill needs to get approval from the Republican-controlled Ohio House and then would head to Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s desk for his signature.
“Yes, we want to punish people for offending. But at the same time, if you lose your driver’s license, then it’s going to affect your employment. It’s going to affect your ability to procure insurance. And frankly, it even leads to recidivism. So, we wanted to pull some of those back,” Blessing said.
