The Ohio Senate Education Committee approved a bill that would require all school districts to allow students to leave school mid-day for off-campus religious instruction. Critics are concerned about a provision that could force schools to out LGBTQ students to their parents.

The Ohio Senate Education Committee advanced two bills that combined into one, requiring school districts to adopt a policy allowing students to leave school mid-day for off-campus religious instruction. This bill also includes the so-called “Parents Bill of Rights,” which critics fear will force schools to out LGBTQ students to their parents. The bill is expected to reach the Senate floor on Wednesday, the final day of the two-year legislative session.

Also on the final day, the Ohio House would have to approve the amendments made in the Senate. Sen. Andrew Brenner, chair of the Senate Education Committee, said he expects the bill to pass in the Senate later Wednesday. He said he expects the House to concur because one of the amendments his committee added to the bill was requested by House Speaker Jason Stephens, a Lawrence County Republican. LifeWise Academy, a Christian released time program headquartered in suburban Columbus, has requested all school districts adopt a policy allowing released time. Currently, Ohio law allows school districts to decide whether to adopt a released time program. Some districts only allow released time during lunch and recess. Other districts allow it in the middle of classes. State law allows students to leave for released time during non-core subjects, such as library or music
