Do you have any memories at Lakeside?
LAKESIDE, Ohio – On a July day in 1872, a group gathered for a picnic at an idyllic spot along the Lake Erie shore near Marblehead.
“They are the touchstones of our community,” said Dale Knobel, whose great-grandfather, an immigrant from England who worked in the Cleveland steel mills, starting coming to Lakeside in the 1890s. “It’s what prevents us from just being another resort by the side of the lake.” Among its many attributes: A 600-foot pier that juts into Lake Erie and is popular for swimming and fishing; historic Hotel Lakeside, which dates back to 1875, one of the oldest operating hotels in the state; and Hoover Auditorium, which has hosted numerous speakers and artists over the years, including Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt.
There’s a resident orchestra, an annual art show, interdenominational religious programming, kids activities and more. Over the next several decades, numerous other Chautauqua communities emerged, in Michigan, Florida, Colorado, New Jersey and elsewhere. Today, fewer than 10 offer continuous, ongoing programming, with the two most active in Lakeside and western New York.
There are other artifacts, too, including old programs, photos and newspaper articles, dishware and menus from restaurants long gone. In the early days, one of Lakeside’s founders, Samuel Gill, took two businessmen to court for violating rules about selling goods on Sundays. One was selling eggs, the other ice cream. Despite its longevity – or perhaps because of it -- the community has faced a few bumps along the road, many of them involving the upkeep of the historic buildings.
