The two-day tally encompasses Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Sundays are typically slow days for COVID-19 case reporting, but the unusually high figure makes sense for a two-day total, and especially as the Omicron variant of the virus pushes up case numbers in the state. For example, Ohio saw its highest one-day total reported on three consecutive days last week, topping out at 15,989 on Dec. 23.
Ohio’s death toll since the beginning of the pandemic early last year now stands at 28,720. This figure comes after a comparatively large number reported this week, 692. The prior three weeks, Ohio reported 657, 520, and 368 COVID-19 deaths, respectively. In the past 24 hours, COVID-19 hospitalizations jumped by 142, to 4,774. That figure is one of the highest Ohio has seen in about one year – before COVID-19 vaccines were widely available – yet consistent with hospitalization figures this past week.
The number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care across Ohio dropped by two in the past 24 hours, the state reports, from 1,194 to 1,192. The Ohio Department of Health has not updated its vaccine dashboard since Dec. 22. The most current figures show 67.5% of Ohioans aged 12 and up have had at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot.Read more Ohio coronavirus news:
