The tally was actually lower this past Tuesday, Jan. 25, but the state reported that figure was incomplete due to a data error. There was no such message with Sunday’s report.
Prior to Tuesday, the last time the daily case report was lower was Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021 .
The daily count of newly reported coronavirus cases in Ohio was regularly above 19,000 for about four weeks. The record for highest one-day total was set on Jan. 15, with more than 50,000 cases reported. However, on that date, the Ohio Department of Health said it was catching up on a reporting backlog caused by a spike in testing during the state’s omicron surge.State data also shows a steady decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations across Ohio.
In the past 24 hours, COVID-19 hospitalizations rose by 42 statewide, up to 4,206. However, that figure is down more than 1,100 since last Sunday, Jan. 23 . COVID-19 patients in intensive care across Ohio fell in the past day, down 50 to 800.Ohio’s death toll since the beginning of the pandemic early 2020 now stands at 33,071. This figure comes after a comparatively large number reported this week, 1,084. The prior four weeks, Ohio reported 1,065, 850, 625 and 727 COVID-19 deaths, respectively.
As for COVID-19 vaccinations, the Sunday figures show 69.26% of Ohioans aged 12 and up have had at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot, and when factoring in those ages 5 and up, that total is 65.15%.Read more coronavirus news on
