The state of Ohio paid up to $30 million more than intended thanks to a 'glitch' in the state's school funding formula.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The state of Ohio mistakenly overpaid K-12 school districts and private-school voucher programs as much as $30 million during the past year because of a glitch in the state’s funding formula, according to state officials.
As state finances tighten, Ohio lawmakers prepare multi-billion-dollar capital budget: Capitol LetterOhio awards millions in energy-efficiency grants, including one to a Cuyahoga County project Those omissions skewed the numbers, resulting in DEW creating a school funding formula that paid districts more money than intended.
The amount each school district was overpaid depended on its size. The overpayments represent a relatively small percentage of the state’s K-12 education spending, said Dan Tierney, Gov. Mike DeWine’s spokesman. Ohio budgeted $9.6 billion for the school foundation funding formula for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.Senate President Matt Huffman, a Lima Republican, said he learned of the “glitch” just hours before he shared it with reporters after Wednesday’s Senate session.
