Two Republican Ohio lawmakers want to lower the age at which seniors receive discounts on hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses. Currently, the discount kicks in at age 66, but the proposed bill would change that to 65.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – If you're exactly 65 years old and frustrated about paying full price for sportsmen licenses, then two Republicans have just the legislation for you. In what the lawmakers call an “oversight” in state law, senior discounts for licenses to hunt, fish, or fur trap don’t kick in until applicants turn 66. The lawmakers' bill would take that down to 65.

(AP Photo/Keith Srakocic) The bill, sponsored by Reps. Mike Hill and John Becker, has been approved by the House Natural Resources and Wildlife Committee. However, it’s unclear if the bill will make it to the full House for a vote before the legislative session ends. Becker said he's been hearing from a lot of constituents who are upset about having to wait another year for their senior discount. 'It's just an oversight,' Becker said. 'There's no good reason why we should make people wait until they're 66 to get their senior discount.' Becker said he hopes the bill will pass soon so that seniors can start saving money on their hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses. Hill, who is also a hunter, said he supports the bill because he believes seniors should be able to enjoy their favorite outdoor activities without having to break the bank
