The Republican-backed bill passed in the House after leaders added it to a Senate bill dealing with the college credit plus program.

Before letting out for summer, Ohio lawmakers advanced a bill banning transgender people from using bathrooms that fit their gender identity.

“We’re concerned about making sure that restroom spaces and private spaces, like locker rooms and changing facilities, have protection and safety for our young women and girls,” said Rep. Bird. “This is what trans people face. A lack of safety and a greater endangerment from laws like this,” said Allison. “It’s a lot more dangerous for trans people in bathrooms than it is for non-trans people. In 2022, a trans man in Oxford went to a campground in Preble County, Ohio. The owner of the place said he had to use the women’s facilities.

Bird said a stand-alone version of the ban passed out of committee with unanimous Republican support.“When it didn’t get one, and we knew we were going into summer break, we were looking for an opportunity to amend this into another bill, and that’s why we did what we did a couple days ago," said Bird.“We shouldn't be allowing the federal executive branch to make this decision or the judicial branch to make this decision. We just sit on our hands and do nothing?” said Bird.
