The Ohio High School Athletic Association has guidelines, not rules, about what goes into an emergency safety plan. The association is working to standardize protocols so that emergency plans are similar in as many locations as possible.

“Probably the most important part of having an emergency action plan is the rehearsal,” Flannery said. “These are living, breathing documents that need to be changed and updated every year.” The plans address serious illness or injury, such as heat illness or heat stroke, sudden cardiac arrest, head injuries, paralysis or severe bleeding.has guidelines, not rules, about what goes into an emergency safety plan. Shaken teammates and fans are flooding social media with messages of support for Hamlin and his family. “The next year when we went back, everybody said how thankful they were that the wider bridge was there when they life-flighted that kid,” Flannery recalled. Some schools also can’t afford to pay for a private ambulance to attend its games. Small towns may have only one city-owned ambulance that might be called away to a car accident or fire.At Ohio State, a meeting is held with the athletic trainers and coaching staff to rehearse the emergency plan prior to the season, said Doug Calland, associate athletic director for sports performance. OSU has 28 licensed athletic trainers.

Like other universities and pro teams, Cleveland State has emergency action plans that are specific for the various sites where teams play. The plan for the Wolstein Center, where CSU plays basketball, includes the location of emergency medications and spine boards for stabilizing players with possible spinal cord injuries, saida sports medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic and head team physician at CSU.
