Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said polling places should not open for tomorrow's primary elections to protect voters and poll workers from contracting coronavirus
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said late Monday the state’s health department will order all polling places not to open for Tuesday’s primary elections to protect voters and poll workers from the coronavirus outbreak.
DeWine's unprecedented order — closing physical polling places because an attempt to postpone the election failed — perplexed even seasoned experts in election law. "We can't tell people it's in their best interest to stay home and at the same time tell people to go vote," DeWine said at a news conference earlier Monday. But Franklin County Judge Richard Frye ruled later that evening that it was too late to move back the primary.
“There is no medical evidence here today to suggest that” it would be safer to vote in June, Frye added. “To the contrary, it’s my understanding from the briefings we’ve seen in the national media that it may be months before we get to a point of stability or a peak of the virus and its transmission rates.”
