The states alleged Johnson & Johnson marketed its talc baby and body powders as safe, despite evidence linking talc, which contained asbestos,Despite the settlement, filed in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas on Tuesday, the company has denied any wrongdoing. It maintains that its since-discontinued talc products are safe. It can pay the money in chunks through 2027.
“Selling harmful products without disclosing the risks is unacceptable and our legal action ensures companies are held accountable,” Attorney General Dave Yost said in a statement. Nearly 60,000 other plaintiffs are suing the company over alleged injuries sustained via its baby powder, it said in afrom the company floated resolving the claims against it via a nearly $6.5 billion settlement, although this has not been finalized.In a statement, spokesman Erik Haas said the company continues to pursue a “comprehensive and final” resolution of talc litigation, including the multistate lawsuit.
