Thermal fuses are being promoted by the state fire marshal’s office as a way to reduce the number of deadly fires caused by people smoking while on oxygen.

Published: Apr. 24, 2024 at 9:21 PM EDTRAVENNA, Ohio - A small device costing less than $10 could save lives and protect homes from devastating fires, according to Ohio fire officials.

Anita Metheny, fire prevention bureau chief for the Division of State Fire Marshal, explained the dangers. “Once that catches fire, it burns straight down the tubing,” Metheny said. “That fire now follows the flow of oxygen because it’s hyper-oxygenated all the way to their oxygen machine, which basically starts fire throughout the entire house.”The devices are placed on oxygen tubing and stop the flow of oxygen and preventing flames from reaching the oxygen tank.

While thermal fuses won’t prevent burns to the smoker, Metheny says they can save lives. “There’s going to be injuries, and people should know if you smoke on oxygen, you run a very big risk,” Metheny said. “But by putting this on, we’re hoping they’re not going to die in a house fire.”

I still disagree with that opinion. In my opinion it's a combination of bandwagonism and contrarianism in NW Ohio.

The Ohio secretary of state must certify candidates 90 days before the general election, but the DNC is set to start after this deadline. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose has brought this issue to the attention of the Ohio Democratic Party, suggesting that either the DNC moves up its convention or the Ohio General Assembly creates an exception to the requirement. The situation is being monitored, and it is expected that Joe Biden will still be on the ballot in Ohio.
