Laurie Stevenson will step down as the Ohio EPA director Dec. 31, she announced in a letter this week.

The director of Ohio's Environmental Protection Agency will leave her post on Dec. 31.

"I have taken time over the past several weeks to reflect on my personal journey at Ohio EPA and the path ahead. After much thought, I have decided to retire from state service at the end of this calendar year," Stevenson wrote. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Stevenson as Ohio EPA director in 2019, promoting her from the agency's deputy director for business relations.

Farmers and some environmental groups have praised H2Ohio, which launched in the first year of Stevenson's tenure as Ohio EPA director, even if researchers generally say it's too soon toPrior to Stevenson's promotion to director, she had a 29-year career in state government that included various roles protecting the state's environment. She was a hazardous-waste field inspector and managed the Ohio EPA's small-business assistance office.
