A state senator wants to give Ohio voters the final say on whether cities can use traffic cameras to issue tickets.
CLEVELAND , Ohio - A state senator wants to give Ohio voters the final say on whether cities can use traffic cameras to issue tickets. Senator Tom Patton has proposed legislation that would require voter approval before cities can install new traffic cameras or keep existing ones.
The bill comes as Patton says he hears daily complaints from constituents about receiving tickets in the mail from cameras like those at Harvard Avenue and Washington Park in Newburgh Heights. While Patton says he supports traffic safety, he argues the cameras don’t actually make roads safer. “Getting a ticket in the mail a month later does nothing to improve the safety of the citizens,” Patton said.“There’s not a single camera company in Ohio which means at minimum there’s 40% of every dollar leaving the state,” Patton said.Currently, cities can install traffic cameras without seeking public approval. Cities like Parma in Patton’s district have cameras in place. Under Patton’s proposed bill, voters in cities with existing cameras would see the question on their ballot.“I think it’s appropriate to let the voters decide do we really want to watch these out-of-state camera companies come in and put their hands in our pockets,” Patton said.Beloved high school baseball coach dies in UTV crash; man charged with vehicular homicide, DUI
