On the second night of Milan Fashion Week, I was discussing the day’s runway shows with two colleagues over pasta, wine, and veal Milanese. We talked about brand identity and the evolution of design, as well as, of course, the clothes, the bags, and the shoes—what we loved, what we liked, and what could have done without. Then, with full bellies and jet-lagged minds, we flipped the switch on fashion and turned to the importance of travel.

Perhaps it wasn't just the time zone-change that made us think of wanderlust, but rather all the clues that Bottega Veneta’s creative director Matthieu Blazy had left leading up to his runway show at the end of the week. The first were the brand's livestream ads, which featured spinning globes and outlines of maps. The second was the show invite, which included a compass fastened to a leather watch strap.

It turns out the answer was everywhere and anywhere. As Blazy noted backstage after the show, he “started with the idea of a journey, so as the model was walking down the runway it was this idea of their own journey, put together with our journey.” It was about “blending worlds” and “pulling inspiration literally from all over the world: South America, South East Asia, Russia, Brittany, Sicily. Everywhere was a new possibility.
