The regulator recommends increasing payouts by a third
Ofgem is considering a change in energy compensation rules that could see customers receiving more money if their supplier fails to meet industry standards. Under the new proposal, customers would receive £40 in compensation if their supplier doesn't adhere to Ofgem's standards.
This consultation is the latest in a series of changes aimed at improving standards for customers across the energy industry, following significant increases in bills in recent years. These include requiring suppliers to pay compensation faster when they fail to switch a customer on time.Suppliers are also required to prioritise inquiries from vulnerable customers and provide proactive support to those struggling to pay their bills.
If a supplier fails to meet any of these standards, it must automatically pay compensation to the affected person. The move comes after Ofgem ordered E. On Next, Good Energy and Octopus Energy to pay £8 million in compensation for delaying or failing to make statutory compensation payments owed to energy customers in 2023.
