The whale, still alive but in distress, has drawn attention from the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network and Oregon State Police, who are responding to the situation.
Authorities warned the public to keep their distance as approaching the whale poses risks to both people and first responders."Approaching the whale puts you and first responders at risk. Keeping your distance makes a big difference," a statement from Oregon State Parks said. Volunteers began arriving in San Marine after a Facebook post by Discovering Depoe Bay Oregon highlighted the whale's plight. The post noted that the whale was still alive and calling for help as of Sunday, with high tide approaching. Marine biologist Carrie Newell from Whale Research Eco Excursions expressed concern over the whale's condition. In a statement posted on social media, she said, "This is a very sad situation. The humpback is a wild animal and please, under no circumstances, approach the whale," Newell said. She explained that a beached whale's internal organs are compressed without the buoyancy of water, which can be life-threatening. Additionally, the whale's blubber, which retains heat, can cause overheating on land. Newell, a member of the Stranding Network, is en route to the site to assist with crowd control and education.BE THE FIRST TO COMMENT Newell noted that the whale's survival chances are slim, but high tide might offer a chance for it to return to the sea.
