The ADPH said citizens should “take extra precautions during times of extremely cold weather,” like temperatures the state will experience this week.
DOTHAN, Ala. — On Tuesday, the Alabama Department of Public Health urged the public to know the signs and symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite ahead of this week’s freezing temperatures.
Hypothermia, which occurs when the body’s core temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, is a medical emergency that can cause death. When humans are exposed to cold, their bodies begin to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Frostbite, which can result in amputations or necrosis, is an injury most commonly affecting exposed skin like on the nose, cheeks and ears. However, frostbite can also occur on hands and feet.
Warm the center of the person’s body using an electric blanket, if available. Skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets is also a way to warm the person’s body.
