Many people rely on the outdoor storm sirens to alert them when to take cover, but this could be problematic.

With an active year that has seen more than 1,000 tornadoes so far, knowing the most effective ways to receive weather information is important. COFFEE COUNTY , Ala. - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association has recorded more than 1,000 hurricanes already in 2024.

“We don’t want anyone to rely solely on those weather sirens systems,” said Deputy Director Grant Lyons with Coffee County EMA. “They’re able to fine tune these polygons to surround the storm in where it’s going,” said 4-Warn Meteorologist Zack Webster.“You would have tornado sirens going off all around the county, even though some of those locations may not actually be included within that tornado warning,” said Webster.

“Those sirens are partially dependent on to where the weather is blowing,” said Lyons. “So, if the winds blowing a certain direction, you may not hear the sirens.”
