The historic clubhouse at Oakland’s Lake Chabot Golf Course was gutted in a two-alarm fire Tuesday morning, but hours later, golfers had already returned to the links.
OAKLAND — A two-alarm fire early Tuesday gutted the historic clubhouse at the Lake Chabot Golf Course, officials said.Someone in the area of the course, located at 11450 Golf Links Road in East Oakland, saw flames coming from the site about 12:30 a.m. and called the fire department.
The first firefighters on scene saw the clubhouse heavily involved with smoke and fire and quickly called a second alarm, officials said. Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt said 40 firefighters brought the fire under control about 1:50 a.m. A fire damaged portion of the Chabot Cafe at the Lake Chabot Golf Course on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, in Oakland, Calif.
The fire was confined to the clubhouse, which includes a restaurant, dining room and bar and space for other events. Hunt said the clubhouse was “pretty much in ruins.” Hunt said the roof to the nearby pro shop sustained some damage, but not the shop itself.Investigators believe the fire started in a kitchen area but were not able to immediately determine the cause, Hunt said. A damage figure was still being determined as was the stability of the building.
