An officer was slashed during an incident on the east side of Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, police said. The officers were responding to an assault in progress and while restraining a male suspect who was attempting to attack a separate victim, the officer was slashed, according to police.
It happened along 3rd Ave and E. 20th Street, police said.The suspect was taken into custody and charges are pending. PBA President Patrick Hendry released a statement saying, "We're grateful that our brother is recovering. However, cops across this city are still being attacked by violent suspects at a record pace, resulting in nearly 3,000 injuries to cops in the first half of this year alone. The reason for this epidemic is clear: our justice and mental health systems are failing to keep dangerous individuals off the streets.
