"Officers arrived in the area and were outside of their patrol vehicles when they heard more gunshots that were believed to have been fired at them," the KPD wrote on social media.
"One Officer returned fire towards the suspect who was on an upper story of the building at the location." Police said officers cleared the building and detained someone who said their brother, believed to be the suspected shooter, "had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an apartment on the upper floor." "I had my balcony door open, and I heard a few shots, and I wasn’t sure if that was fireworks, but it sounded so loud, it was piercing," Kimberly Vitale-Ezeldin, who lives in the building, said. "My husband and I came downstairs to make sure our cars are okay, and we just see the SWAT team coming in, and they said, 'We’re going up to the 7th floor.'""Officers secured the unit and rendered aid until Medics arrived to take over life saving measures," police said. "Despite their efforts, the 34-year-old male succumbed to his wounds and did not survive.""We are not sure at this point whether or not an officer hit the shooter, but the shooter was identified as deceased in his apartment," KPD Chief Rafael Padilla said, adding that VIIT will determine the trajectories of the bullets.
