Splendid off-grid Lancashire village in the belly of spectacular valley dubbed 'the Little Lake District'
Slaidburn looks especially resplendent in the brilliant spring sunshine. Flowers are stuffed in a wellington boot-shaped plant pot on the doorstep of an idyllic stone cottage, Peter Rabbit characters perched in the window and a radiant floral wreath hanging on the doorknob.
And you can soak it all in without the interruption of mobile phone notifications, because signal is non-existent. Pure bliss, even if temporary. It is one of several historic and listed buildings in the village, which include The Hark to Bounty Inn and Ellerbeck Hall, a pebble dash house. But the most magnificent is the gothic Brennands Endowed Primary School, which is reminiscent of Crunchem Hall in Roald Dahl's Matilda, under Miss Honey's leadership and not Agatha Trunchbull's, of course.
