Frustrated with the slow rollout of grid infrastructure for electric vehicles and AI data centers, DC Grid is stepping in to provide off-grid power solutions. Founder Vic Shao believes current grid systems are inefficient and burdened by bureaucracy, hindering the adoption of clean technologies. DC Grid offers modular systems, installable within three months for EV charging hubs and 12-18 months for data centers, powered by direct current (DC) for increased efficiency and reduced land requirements.
Frustrated with the combination of what its founder terms inefficiencies of AC-power systems and red tape from municipalities and utilities to build an infrastructure to power electric vehicle charging stations and artificial intelligence data centers, a new company providing off-grid power is stepping in to fill the gap.
Founder Vic Shao cites his experiences running other energy companies such as Amply Power and Green Charge network as the basis for creating DC Grid.“After 15 years of this, it's like a lot of these clean tech innovations and adoption are being choked by just bureaucracy and the slow process of getting assets online, and that's the problem, and there just has to be a solution and alternative, if industries like EVs and data centers now also that are soaking up a lot of power, for these industries to scale up,” said Shao, in an interview. The alternative DC Grid aims to provide are modular systems that can be installed within three months for EV charging hubs and 12-18 months for AI-driven data center.FBI Warns Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail Users—Check 3 Things To Stop AttacksFor EV charging stations in particular DC Grid’s product is the Authentix™ 300 kW DC/DC Fast Charger, an ultra compact dual hose unit powered by direct current that can accommodate both Tesla’s North American Charging Standard and Combined Charging Standard plugs. The key to DC Grid’s ability to install the units quickly at less cost, said Shao, is powering them with direct, rather than alternating current, which, he says, skips one conversion step. “The power is more efficient because you're eliminating that loss from DC to AC. Secondly, less land is required for that solar system because, again, it's more efficient. There's less space required for inverters and whatnot, so the solar farm becomes a little bit smaller,” explained Shao. “Secondly, the loads these days for the high growth areas, whether it's EV charging, fast chargers, data centers, they're also direct current based. So you are skipping again on the other side, AC to DC conversion, more losses, more waste.” DC Grid’s business model is based on energy as a service where an EV fleet operator or data center can rent the power units to tide them over until permanent charging or power stations are built, or they can purchase the units. “It's just on-site assembly of all this gear, and we can set it up in days. You can tear it down again in days. So that allows us to sign a one-year term contract with the end customer by the usage and when they're done, then we take it and we go off to the next customer,” Shao explained. DC Grid has signed memoranda of understanding for six sites, with the first going into operation next summer, according to Shao. The company is joining a growing roster of those working to make EV charging more accessible, especially for owners who do not have home chargers.a plan to retrofit streetlights in cities such as New York, Chicago and Detroit with public level two EV chargers.“The goal is to eliminate infrastructure as the barrier for adoption for electric vehicles,” Shao declared. “Let's get the infrastructure in place, and if we have to move on to the next site and the next site, when the utility finally comes on board, so be it. We're happy to be that bridge.”Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
