Despite receiving numerous complaints about overgrown brush along Ohio's interstates, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) prioritizes safety concerns over brush clearing. ODOT crews focus on addressing issues like debris in the roadway, potholes, and missing stop signs first, addressing these concerns within 1-3 days. While brush clearing is eventually addressed, it falls lower on the priority list.

The cleanup took place on the easement that borders the property belonging to the Jerusalem Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, along Maynard Avenue, where brush was seen growing through and over the church fence into its parking lot. December 2024 (WSYX) Brush and debris along Ohio's highways repeatedly prompt drivers to lodge complaints with ABC 6 News while asking for action.

Just this month, ABC 6 On Your Side Problem Solvers helped a church in Linden, where the administration was overwhelmed by the overgrowth coming from the I-71 easement.Linden church overwhelmed with overgrowth calls ODOT a bad neighborto clear brush along interstates in the Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo regions. Since then, contracted crews in Columbus completed more than 70 projects, which added up to more than $1.2 million. During the same three months, contracted crews completed 24 projects in Cincinnati (adding up to $288,000) and 15 projects in Toledo (which cost a total of $305,000). However, ODOT representatives tell Problem Solvers that brush clearing is not always the priority when it comes to their complaints received. They say they prioritize safety items first -- like debris or a pothole in the roadway or a missing stop sign. They'll pull ODOT crews to fix these types of calls within one to three days. After that, priority shifts to matters at the centerline of the roadway out. That means highway shoulders and easements can receive attention last. ODOT crews say they receive driver complaints by phone, email, social media and ODOT's website. Complaints must first be assessed before priority is determined
