During October, we turn our awareness to mental health in our community.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Mental health struggles affect a large portion of our community. As of last year, over 41 percent of adults in Alaska reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. Fortunately, there is plenty of hope for anyone in this situation.
The American Behavioral Clinics describe depression as a highly treatable condition with many different options available. First and foremost, of course, do not hesitate to reach out to a therapist or other mental health professional. In addition to professional help, experts recommend eating a regularly healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, and maintaining at least 10 minutes of physical activity every day. Avoid mood-altering substances such as alcohol. One of the most critical steps on the path to mental health is to stay connected with your social support network, so reach out to your friends and family.
It is important for people struggling with depression to be aware that one’s current circumstances are rarely as bad as a depressed mindset makes them seem. The vast majority of people who seek help for depression achieve a more healthy and stable lifestyle. Even when symptoms linger it is more than possible to live a whole and fulfilling life.
