Measuring nearly 14 feet in length and weighing an astonishing 1,653 pounds, this impressive creature is providing valuable data for researchers studying shark behavior and ocean conservation. The SPOT tag deployed on Contender will transmit real-time location data for approximately five years, allowing scientists to track his movements and understand his migration patterns. Researchers also collected important biological samples, including urogenital material, which are currently undergoing analysis. Contender's name honors Contender Boats, a company with a long-standing partnership with OCEARCH. Their high-performance sport fishing and pleasure boats play a crucial role in supporting OCEARCH's ocean exploration and conservation efforts.While Contender's presence in the Atlantic raises interest, there's no need for beachgoers to cancel their Florida vacations. The shark has generally stayed more than 40 miles off the coast. Biologists explain that sharks, including great whites, often migrate to the waters off Florida and the Southeast during the fall and winter in search of prey. During spring and summer, they tend to travel further offshore and northward towards the Northeast U.S. and Canada to feed on seals. The International Fund for Animal Welfare estimates that the global population of great white sharks exceeds 3,000 and is not currently considered endangered. However, climate change and entanglements pose threats to their populations. OCEARCH notes that the tag on Contender requires exposure to air for approximately 90 seconds to accurately triangulate the shark's location. The battery is designed to last around five years, but its lifespan depends entirely on how frequently the shark surfaces.
