It's impractical to save aging concrete structure; new one would cost less, last longer
Replacement is the best option for the 1927 concrete approach ramp to Oceanside’s much-loved municipal pier, a city commission said this week.
A new bridge would cost less and last longer than restoring the old one, Marshall said. It also would allow the project to address issues such as sea-level rise and the additional space needed for the city’s lifeguard headquarters, which has outgrown the building it occupies beneath the bridge. Oceanside’s pier is one of the most photographed attractions in North County, and residents along with city officials want to keep its distinctive appearance.
Past repairs and modifications have kept the bridge and lifeguard headquarters in service, but the structures fail to meet seismic safety standards and current building codes. Additional lifeguard space would be created by building a new three-story facility beneath the bridge, east of The Strand, to replace the single-level structure now leased to the Tin Fish restaurant. The new, larger building could cut partially into the slope at the base of the bluff.
The current schedule calls for preliminary design and environmental work through 2024, final design and permitting in 2026, and completion in mid 2027.
