Oceanside residents voiced their concerns over a proposed warehouse and distribution facility, leading to a planning commission decision and a planned appeal.
Oceanside residents packed the city council chambers Monday night, voicing their concerns over a proposed warehouse and distribution facility. The project, slated for construction on Eddie Jones Way and Benet Road near the Oceanside Municipal Airport, has sparked controversy due to worries about pollution, traffic, and noise. The developer, RPG, initially proposed a massive 566,905 square foot facility with 114 truck bays.
However, after facing community backlash, they scaled down the project to 497,882 square feet with 56 semitruck bays. Despite the reduction, many residents remain apprehensive. Concerns were raised about the potential for increased pollution, traffic congestion, and disruptions during fire evacuations. The lack of specified operating hours in the conditional use permit further fueled their anxieties. While a few residents expressed support for the project, citing the potential for job growth, the majority voiced their opposition. The planning commission ultimately approved the project's conditional use permit but reduced the number of semitruck bays to 34. This decision, however, was met with disappointment by many residents who plan to appeal. Oceanside Speaks Out, a local advocacy group, intends to collect signatures to challenge the planning commission's approval. Keck, a member of Oceanside Speaks Out, emphasized the urgency of the appeal, stating that they aim to gather far more than the required 25 signatures. The final decision now rests with the City Council, which will consider the formal appeal from Oceanside Speaks Out.
