Samantha Hunter, chief executive at Occupational Therapy Australia, had a 40-year break from jogging. Now she has the New York Marathon in her sights.
My 2023 New Year’s resolution was to focus on my health. I was a cross-country runner in my youth and thought that going back to running would be a good way to focus on not only my fitness but the benefits of being outside in nature, and getting a run in for my two dogs too.
I say running, but I started with “ruffling”, my own unique combination of running and shuffling. My motto is “slow and steady”.I started with the weekly parkrun event in Princes Park on Saturday mornings and added other solo runs to that as the months went by. I was further inspired watching my son finish the Sydney Half Marathon, and he was inspired that I started running after a 40-year break, so he registered me in the Melbourne Marathon 10-kilometre run.
The sense of accomplishment I got led me to register for the Beyond Blue 2XU Wellness Run, another 10-kilometre run, which I did with my niece Annie.My favourite local places to run are along the Maribyrnong River in Footscray and at Princes Park in Carlton. I can do the Princes Park parkrun before a round of golf, which is an excellent way to spend a Saturday morning.No.
