A Huntington Beach man seriously injured in the Cypress crash alleged that Suzuki knew of the brake issues that caused it.

An Orange County jury has ordered Suzuki to pay more than $160 million to a Huntington Beach man who was seriously injured when the front brakes of his motorcycle failed to work as he attempted to avoid an SUV that stopped suddenly.

Suzuki, based in Japan with U.S. headquarters in Brea, did not respond to requests for comment on the jury’s decision or if they plan to appeal. In 2018, a different Orange County Superior Court jury ordered, including roughly $6 million in punitive damages and $2 million in compensatory damages. But that verdict was overturned on appeal, leading to several years of legal wrangling and ultimately the second trial that resulted in the much larger verdict.

The day of the crash, Soulliere had dropped a present off at a friend’s home and was headed to the salon on his newly-purchased 2009 Suzuki GSXR 600 motorcycle when the driver of a 2004 Chevy Suburban suddenly pulled out of a parking lot on Valley View. The front tire of the motorcycle struck either a tire or bumper of the Suburban, causing the motorcycle to spin and forcing Soulliere to collide with the vehicle, “destroying” his femur and “obliterating” the knee-cap of his right leg his attorneys wrote in court filings.

A defect with a brake piston in the front brake master cylinder that was subject to corrosion and could generate gas in the brake system and reduce the braking power to the front brakes was known to the company for at least a decade, the plaintiff’s attorney’s have argued.
