You may be tempted to wish someone a happy Memorial Day this Monday. Some groups, however, say to phrase it differently.
, COSF also says this is also slightly missing the point, as those who serve or have would rather have the community join them in honoring the fallen. What should we say instead? The COSF suggests wishing someone a meaningful Memorial Day rather than a happy one, or encouraging loved ones to help remember those who have served.
"Memorial Day is a very outstanding opportunity to give thanks and remember not only those who have lost their lives but also put their lives on the line and sacrificed everything," ABC 6 photojournalist Cory Davis, who is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force said.Military and veteran groups also ask that the community observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. Monday with a minute of silence.Memorial Day traces its origins to the end of the Civil War when it was called Decoration Day to honor the lives lost in that war. It was expanded to include all American wars after World War I, and was declared a national holiday in 1971.
