The backlash to Star Wars' Grand Inquisitor's design in Obi-Wan Kenobi may be bad for Grand Admiral Thrawn's live- action reception in Ahsoka.
One element of Obi-Wan Kenobi that garnered a lot of criticism before the show was even released was the character design for the Grand Inquisitor, backlash that does not bode well for another Star Wars villain.
Given his appearances in Star Wars Rebels and of the Pau'an species in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, most expected a smooth transition to live-action for the Inquisitor. This proved to be untrue. Immediately upon his debut in the promotional material for the show, the Grand Inquisitor's design, particularly his head, was a topic of much heated discussion. With a method already proven to be successful, it was assumed that the make-up team would replicate the work done by that of Revenge of the Sith's. Yet, the character's final look resulted in an abundance of surprise and confusion.Star Wars Must Avoid Repeating Its Grand Inquisitor Mistake With Thrawn The Grand Inquisitor's simple design change immediately veered the conversation away from the emotional, character-driven story of the show towards scrutiny of Obi-Wan Kenobi's budget and behind-the-scenes work. The fact that the transition from animation to live-action did not go smoothly is bad for the iconic Star Wars villain Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn looks set to make his live-action debut in Ahsoka, and a change in approach is necessary to avoid similar backlash for the highly-anticipated show. There is added pressure for the makeup and costume departments that have created icons like Darth Vader over the years to bring their A-game for Thrawn, especially since Chiss have never appeared in live-action. From a narrative perspective, Grand Admiral Thrawn is destined to be as integral a character to the story as he is in Timothy Zahn's numerous Thrawn books and Rebels. However, getting the Grand Admiral's design or physical look wrong may earn Ahsoka and any other future projects with Thrawn backlash in the same vein as the Grand Inquisitor. Thrawn Is Easier To Adapt Than The Grand Inquisitor With his elongated head and the intricate details that are trademarks of the species, the Grand Inquisitor was far from the easiest character to adapt from animation to live-action, despite Pau'ans debuting in the prequels. Thrawn and the Chiss generally have a far simpler design. Still, as Star Wars' next big villain, Thrawn will be tricky to properly adapt to live-action, especially given the peculiar facial structure of the genius strategist. If the trademark blue skin or red eyes do not translate well, looking cheap or sloppily done will be a major knock against any shows or movies that will star Thrawn. The Grand Admiral's appearance in Rebels was also initially criticized, in large part due to how Thrawn's face, hair, and updated eyes were introduced in the show's unique animation style. Lars Mikkelsen's vocal performance and the series' writing quickly turned Thrawn into a stand-out, but the reception to the Grand Inquisitor proves live-action is less forgiving. In addition to the character's easier humanoid translation to live-action, the budget for projects like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka should be adequate for the make-up department to nail down Thrawn's look. Obi-Wan Kenobi was criticized for looking 'cheaper' in comparison to shows like Andor; with the proper tools available, there is no reason why Thrawn's live-action design cannot live up to, or exceed, his animated counterpart. Ultimately, the issues with the Grand Inquisitor's design have not inspired a ton of confidence. Despite making for an easier crossover to live-action and his general future in Star Wars being an exciting blank slate, the backlash to Obi-Wan Kenobi's Grand Inquisitor may be a sign of things to come for Grand Admiral Thrawn.More: Who Is Grand Admiral Thrawn?
