While childhood obesity remains a serious problem in the United States, a new study finds that obesity rates among low-income preschoolers have declined

While childhood obesity remains a serious problem in the United States, an"encouraging" new study finds that obesity rates among low-income preschoolers have declined.

The prevalence of obesity among 2- to 4-year-olds enrolled in the nation's Women, Infants and Children nutrition program fell from 15.9% in 2010 to 13.9% in 2016, according to a study published Tuesday in the medical journal JAMA.

"The continued decline in obesity rates among children participating in WIC is encouraging and yet another indication that all eligible families should be able to participate in and benefit from this critical program," Jamie Bussel, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a health nonprofit, said in a statement Tuesday. She went on to explain some factors that might be driving this decline in obesity rates among young children.
