Ben-Adir, in a bravura turn, plays a version of Malcolm X we rarely see, his sensitivity, lightheartedness, and vulnerability on full display. This Malcolm creates treasure hunts for his daughters to find hidden love notes he has written to them. In the safe space of his motel room, we also see a Malcolm who is anxious and depressed from the toll of constant surveillance and threats against his life. As Malcolm cries, Brown puts his hand on his shoulder.
