A 60-year-old woman was fatally shot during an attempted armed robbery Sunday in the city’s Eastlake neighborhood, authorities said.
Shortly after 2 p.m., police responded to reports of an injury shooting near East 11th Street and Fifth Avenue and arrived to find the woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
According to preliminary information released by investigators, the woman was visiting the neighborhood from another part of Oakland and sitting in a parked vehicle with a friend when she was approached from outside by a gunman who tried to rob her. The killing marks the 77th death investigated as a homicide by Oakland police so far this year. Another four homicides within city limits have been investigated by the California Highway Patrol. At this point last year, Oakland police had investigated 81 homicides.
Bas, whose council district includes the neighborhood where the fatal shooting happened, asked: “What does it say about our community when we cannot walk down our own street, visit a neighbor, or enjoy a picnic on the Lake on a Sunday afternoon? We can and must do better. NO ONE should presume they can come into Oakland at any time and commit a violent crime without repercussions.”
