The resolution for the safe RV parking site was part of a number of homelessness initiatives approved by the council last week to help beef up housing solutions in 2022.
OAKLAND — A city-owned parking lot near the Oakland Coliseum could become the next “safe parking site” for some of the hundreds of people who live in RVs or other vehicles in the city.
According to city memos, the site could potentially accommodate up to 150 vehicles, although the plan approved by the council did not specify exactly how many or when. Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan, who called for the latest safe parking site, intended to also seek a city-managed RV site near Interstate 880 and High Street. But she scrapped the idea after Councilmember Noel Gallo said that could conflict with a plan to provide parking there for BART riders.
Oakland also is applying for funding from California’s Homekey program, created to allow local governments to buy and refurbish buildings — usually hotels — for those who need shelter.
