OAKLAND — The California Highway Patrol closed all lanes of Interstate 580 east of Lake Merritt after a multi-vehicle collision claimed at least one person’s life Monday night, authorities said.
Shortly after 9:50 p.m., CHP officers received reports of a collision involving several vehicles in westbound I-580 lanes near Park Boulevard, CHP Officer Damian Cistaro said. Oakland police and firefighters also responded to the scene alongside paramedics, and worked to control the scene by blocking the roadway’s two left-hand lanes and providing care to injured people.
Despite first responder efforts, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, Cistaro said. Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau staff were responding to the scene late Monday. CHP officers issued a Sig-alert at 10:04 p.m. blocking all eastbound I-580 lanes with no initial estimated time of reopening and traffic diverted off the freeway’s No. 4 lane onto Park Boulevard.
