OAKLAND — A federal judge Wednesday indicated the Oakland Police Department could soon be released from the federal oversight it’s been subjected to for almost two decades since four officers notoriously known as “the Riders” were accused of brutalizing people on the streets.
The department is in compliance with all but one of the reform measures. The outstanding task requires the department to make sure officers across the department are disciplined consistently after a report determined Black officers are disciplined more often than white officers in some department investigations.
“What we are looking for is a department that can identify problems and major scandals if and when they occur and will not leave them to someone else,” Chanin said. Schaaf agreed, acknowledging that the city has more work to do, and that its leaders are committed to doing it.
