The California Highway Patrol reopened all lanes of Interstate 580 Thursday night after their closure when a multi-vehicle collision claimed a person’s life, authorities said.
Shortly after 9 p.m., CHP officers received multiple reports of a person walking in westbound I-580 lanes just west of High Street, CHP Officer Damian Cistaro said.
When officers arrived, they found the body of a person who had been struck by at least one vehicle. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, Cistaro said. Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau staff were responding to the scene late Thursday. CHP officers issued a Sig-alert at 9:19 p.m. blocking all westbound I-580 lanes for about 10 to 15 minutes before opening the roadway’s two left-hand lanes. The roadway’s right-hand lanes were closed until the Sig-alert was lifted at 10:27 p.m.
