The City of Oakland has expanded its safety camera network with new installations along the Hegenberger Avenue corridor, a key business district in East Oakland, officials announced Wednesday. The $150,000 investment, funded by the City Council and coordinated by the Economic & Workforce Development Department, aims to enhance security and deter crime.
The cameras were strategically placed using Oakland Police Department data and community input, a press release issued Thursday noted. Councilmember Ken Houston emphasized the importance of visibility in crime prevention, highlighting recent efforts to clear abandoned vehicles and restore long-dark streetlights in District 7. Former Councilmember Treva Reid noted that the project, delayed through two budget cycles, addresses long-standing community calls for crime prevention resources. Business owners will receive training on camera operation, and footage will be available to law enforcement when needed, officials said. “The Hegenberger Corridor is an important gateway and a critical economic engine in the City, and we will continue our coordinated investment in the Corridor,” said Ashleigh Kanat, Director of Oakland’s Economic and Workforce Development Department.BART safety push sees crime drop, ridership rise in 2024 Officials further said the initiative builds on broader safety investments, including the SafeCity Connect program and Downtown Corridor Safety Program. Early results show a decline in auto burglaries, robberies, and thefts in the area.
