CIF NorCal Division II boys basketball semifinals: Oakland overcomes free throw shooting woes to punch ticket to NorCal final vs. crosstown rival

OAKLAND – Oakland forward Isaac Johnson flies in for a layup in the fourth quarter. Oakland and Fremont-Oakland played a high school basketball game at Oakland High School in Oakland, Calif. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 SAN JOSE — Oakland High scored the first 14 points of the game, never trailed, and held off Bellarmine at the end in a 57-54 victory Saturday in a CIF Northern California Division II boys basketball semifinal.

The Wildcats can only hope that history repeats itself, that the fourth time proves to be the charm, once again. After Oakland got off to that 14-0 start Saturday, Bellarmine righted itself and scored the final seven points of the first quarter. The Bells got as close as three in the second quarter before Oakland went back up by eight at halftime. They cut Oakland’s lead to 44-42 in the third quarter and to 50-48 in the fourth, but were never able to draw even.

“If I told you we shoot free throws every day religiously, you wouldn’t believe it by our percentage,” Watkins said. “But as long as we keep making them when it counts, I’m a happy guy.”How selfless Salesian got over NorCal Open hump: ‘We didn’t feel the pressure’
