The A’s break camp with lower expectations than they’ve had in recent years, but opportunity is high for individual players looking to make an impression.

The Oakland A’s finalized their 2022 Opening Day roster on Thursday, a day before they start the season in Philadelphia.

The turnover within even a single year is rather stunning to consider, in totality: Only nine players from their initial 2021 roster are in the 2022 starting group, even with two extra roster spots this year. After rumors picked up in November and persisted during MLB’s owner-imposed lockout, Oakland traded away four star players during the abbreviated spring training: third baseman Matt Chapman, first baseman Matt Olson and starting pitchers Chris Bassitt and Sean Manaea. They also let several players leave as free agents, most notably outfielders Mark Canha and Starling Marte .

Of the 13 pitchers the A’s carried on their initial 26-man roster in 2021, only three remain: Opening Day starter Frankie Montas, left-handed starter Cole Irvin and closer Lou Trivino. It’s only slightly better on the position player side, as six players remain a year later: infielders Elvis Andrus, Jed Lowrie, Chad Pinder and Tony Kemp, outfielder Stephen Piscotty and catcher Sean Murphy. Ramón Laureano is still with Oakland, but he’ll miss the first 27 games of 2022 as he completes an 80-game performance-enhancing drug suspension.
