The season is over for the Oakland A’s, but the political intrigue surrounding a new ballpark on the Howard Terminal site, adjacent to the waterfront near downtown Oakland, and the rejuvenation of the Coliseum property is ongoing.

(Photo by Thearon W.The season is over for the Oakland A’s, but the political intrigue surrounding a new ballpark on the Howard Terminal site, adjacent to the waterfront near downtown Oakland, is ongoing.

“Absolutely,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said after the loss. “We saw it here tonight. We always see it here during the postseason. We see it on fireworks nights, you know, big series. They come out for us.” “It’s disappointing,” Melvin said. “There was a big crowd here and it was beyond a big crowd. They came out in full force. They were engaged from the first pitch of the game. It just seemed like we couldn’t give enough for them to really get into it. Every inning they were up. Every inning they were waving their towels and so forth. It was more than disappointing. It was dreadful.

Commissioner Rob Manfred was in town for Wednesday night’s game along with a contingent from his office and couldn’t have been pleased about the developments. The long and short of it is that the A’s have been involved with simultaneous redevelopment projects for the new ballpark at the center of a ballpark village on the Howard Terminal property just north of Jack London Square, and the Coliseum property.

The Howard Terminal site now sits fallow. Once a delivery base for cargo shipped across the seas from Hawaii, it’s 54 acres of pavement covered with carcasses of truck compartments parked in no particular order. The A’s have played at the Coliseum since moving west from Kansas City in 1968. They have plans to turn the Coliseum grounds and parking lots into a mixed-use area with open space, affordable housing, and a park in the place of the Coliseum.

To that end, a sign that hangs on the Coliseum right now identifies the A’s as the town’s sole proprietors. On the field, after their second consecutive 97-win season, it was traumatic to see it all end in a single game. But they finished in second place, 10 games behind the Astros in the AL West, putting themselves in the single-elimination position.
