Oak Park Festival Theatre presents the musical “Seagulls' about four college students who have different expectations for an upcoming battle of the bands.
Four college students, played by Veronique Le, Ryan Kirby, Julio Cesar Gutierrez, and Aurora Penepacker, prepare for a battle of the bands in “Seagulls,” presented Oct. 12-Nov. 19 by Oak Park Festival Theatre at Pleasant Home.
“I’ve been involved in ‘Seagulls’ since its inception,” Willingham said. “The playwright is one of my dearest friends and we’re artistic collaborators for many years. So I worked with Beth on the original production, which was in 2015, and then we did another short run at Steppenwolf in 2019, so it’s a production that’s really dear to my heart.”Willingham noted that “Seagulls” captures the spirit of the Chekhov play.
She believes that paring the story with rock music is effective because “It’s about young artists and their successes. Rock and indie have always been kind of a rebellious sound. It’s easy for characters like that to connect with that kind of music.”
