Oak Lawn will pay $10 million to settle a lawsuit stemming from a 2019 hit-and-run crash in which Larry Deetjen, at the time village manager, struck a man with his village vehicle.

of negligence and asked for unspecified damages. Police said they used witness statements and video surveillance evidence to identify the vehicle and trace it back to Deetjen.Deetjen told officers he’d heard a vehicle to his left honk its horn and then felt an impact and saw something fly into the air, but continued driving in the belief it was a “barrel or barricade,” according to police.

Deetjen said he had just left a wake for a relative of an Oak Lawn village employee. A Breathalyzer test found no evidence of alcohol in Deetjen’s system and a forensic analysis of his cellphone found no call or text message activity around the time of the crash, police said. Deetjen was placed on paid leave shortly after the hit-and-run and remained on leave until his retirement. Henderson said Berkshire cannot walk independently and is not at the point yet where he can be at home, even with medical careAdvertisement The judge overseeing Berkshire’s lawsuit has approved the settlement, but it also needs to be approved by the probate court because Berkshire’s daughter, Ashleigh Cortes, is acting as his guardian, with the settlement proceeds being put in trust for him, Henderson said.
