Oak Lawn Community High School students explore, share their Polish heritage through events such as Smigus-Dyngus water day, Polish Constitution Day.
Oak Lawn Community High School sophomores Kasia Bienias and Amelia Wiski give a presentation recently about Smigus-Dyngus, Poland’s national water fight day to fellow members of the Polish Culture Club recently at the school in Oak Lawn. A water fight broke out recently near the football field at Oak Lawn Community High School — but this fight was born of tradition and camaraderie, not anger.
Besides being fun, the Smigus-Dyngus water war also was a chance to learn more about ancestral traditions, said Chris Kuchyt, a history teacher who co-sponsors the club. Oak Lawn Community High School teachers Chris Kuchyt and Jesenia Kolimas, co-sponsors of the school’s Polish Culture Club, joined in a recent squirt gun fight as club members recognize Smigus-Dyngus day at the school.
Among those who joined to learn more about Polish culture was Savannah Saldana, whose parents are from Mexico. She said many of her friends are Polish.
